The scene at Kelowna International Airport (YLW) may be a bit concerning at times this week, but there’s no need to panic.

The City of Kelowna has issued a PSA regarding emergency response training set to happen at the airport throughout the week.

YLW and its partners, including the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit, will be conducting live emergency exercises at various times over the coming days.

“Large-scale emergency exercises are conducted to test YLW’s Airport Emergency Plan, along with those of its emergency response partners, in realistic conditions,” the City release explains.

“YLW tests its Emergency Management Plan regularly through live scenario training, table-top exercises and emergency simulation drills.”

There will be a significant presence of emergency response personnel and vehicles in both the terminal building and on the east side of the airfield.

During training periods in the past, onlookers have even spotted flames and smoke, but the City is assuring that there is “no risk to public safety.”

“The focus of these exercises is to demonstrate how multiple and diverse agencies can be integrated to respond quickly and effectively during a major event,” adds the City release.

The City also noted that there will be no impact to flights or airport operations while these training exercises take place.
