Kelowna motorists are being advised of a major improvement project happening on Harvey Avenue between Pandosy and Abbott Streets.

A release from the city says crews will be installing a new sidewalk on the south side of the highway and a new right turn lane.

Melissa Stickland, design technician, says this is meant to improve traffic flow and walkability.

Work starts April 22 and will result in alternating overnight lane closures on Harvey Avenue between Pandosy and Abbott Streets.

There will also be single-lane traffic heading southbound on Pandosy Street between Harvey Avenue and Boyce Crescent.

The sidewalk will also be closed on the south side of the highway between Abbott and Pandosy.

Detours will be in effect for pedestrians during construction.

Motorists are advised to take alternate routes when possible and can expect traffic disruptions while work is underway and are asked to obey all signage and traffic control devices.

Additionally, some water disruptions might happen, but impacted business and residents will be notified beforehand.

Work will take place between 7 am and 5 pm, Monday and Friday with occasional work taking place overnight between 9 pm and 5 am to reduce impacts to traffic on the highway.

The project is expected to wrap up in June.

The city says the $400,000 project is part of the approval requirements for the Central Green development project.
