An abandoned building in West Kelowna has been demolished after it was found on fire.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue (WKFR) Deputy Chief Chad Gartrell said he deemed the fire suspicious but, because the structure was knocked down, the cause remains “undetermined.”

The fire, at the 1800 block of Ross Road, was reported at about 6:30 pm on Sunday.

Smoke from the blaze was “highly visible” from Hwy 97, Gartrell said in a public notice.

He explained: “The first arriving crew did a great job getting water on the fire early in a defensive strategy to ensure the fire didn’t spread to the neighbouring properties or the surrounding field.

“For the safety of the crew it was determined that no entry would be made into this structure for fire suppression.

“An excavator was brought in to take the building down so crews could access remaining hidden fires from a safe location.”

Bylaw, RCMP, paramedics, BC Hydro, FortisBC and others attended the incident alongside WKFR.
