It’s hard to believe that there are rules about decorating with area rugs, but there is! The does and don’ts of area rugs are fairly simple and greatly depend on floor type and the room.  You can use area rugs as accents to brighten up your space or to separate areas of a room.

Welcome to Area Rugs 101: Your Guide to decorating with Rugs!

• Area rugs come in all shapes and sizes. Don’t be afraid to opt for unusual shapes and sizes, they add interest to a room and can be used to spice up drab interiors. Circle shaped area rugs are awesome under round tables, make your eating area stand out with a rug that compliments your kitchen décor.

• Floor runners are great for hallways and front entrances. Not only to they protect the flooring in these high traffic areas but they create an elegant “map”, for visitors to follow when they come over. Keep in mind that floor runners should be 4 inches narrower than your hallway and about 18- 24 inches shorter.

• Got a large living room? Use a rug to separate the space into separate spaces. An area rug can be used to define a seating space or reading corner. Remember that if you are going to place more than one rug in a space, they need to be different sizes. Many rugs of the same shape and size create a choppy feely to the room and make the room appear smaller.

• Square or rectangular rugs make great dividers and can add a posh touch to a living room of family room.

• If you are going to use a rug to divide a room, make sure that it is large enough to accommodate your main furniture grouping.

• You can take advantage of the many different types of rugs on the market today to experiment with textures. From shag to bamboo, each rug will add a unique look to your room.

• Color, color, color! Too timid to paint your bedroom wall that beautiful red you saw at the paint store last week? Find a large area rug in that color and place it under your bed!   All the beauty of the color without the commitment.

Now that you have the basics down, go out and enjoy the wonderful world of area rugs!
