Good news music lovers, Orchard Park Mall is no longer missing a vital organ as Sunrise Records has officially opened! (get the organ joke now?)

The time has come

In late February the all-Canadian music store chain announced it would be taking over 70 previous HMV locations, and early in March, the dark clouds parted and news from the music heavens rang out that Kelowna would be lucky enough to gain one of the Sunrise stores.

After two long months of pressing my face against the windows of the hollow vessel that once housed a favorite store where I spent countless hours and dollars, hints of Sunrise Records' triumphant opening came forth from the shadows.

The sign was hung and a few days later, you could see employees inside organizing CD’s, stacking records and hanging posters preparing to welcome home us music fiends.

On Friday morning the doors finally opened and the new store boasted it’s wide variety of genres and artists.

Not much has changed

The look and feel of the store is hardly different aside from the colour scheme and confident rooster in the new logo. The flow of the store is the same, apart from the addition of a significantly larger vinyl section found directly to the right upon entering.

The selection has definitely widened with a seemingly heavier focus on alternative, rock and metal than that of Sunrise’s predecessor HMV. You can also find the same great variety of movie and music items as well as merchandise.

Having overheard the employee's talk of how the opening felt rushed, one can only assume the layout and inventory will get bigger and better with time, but for now let’s just be happy that it's here.

Sunrise Records is an Ancaster, Ontario-based chain that's expanding to 70 different locations where HMV used to operate before going bankrupt.
