More people in the United States are watching NHL games, 61 per cent more so far this postseason, but hockey has nothing on SpongeBob SquarePants.

According to an NBC press release viewership for 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs is up 61 per cent with an average of 621,000 fans tuning in.

The station is also reporting a 25 per cent increase during the first four games of the Playoffs.

While numbers are up the NHL is well behind the NBA Playoffs.

ESPN reports that 3.5 million viewers tuned in for eight playoff games, that’s five times the typical NHL game.

According to the Nielson Ratings SpongeBob is also raking in the viewers as 850,000 viewers tuned in to the cartoon instead of the double overtime between Columbus and Pittsburgh Saturday night.
