New research shows that 83 per cent of Canadians believe community sport can instill character in youth by teaching them positive life lessons.

The study by Participation called Sport Moves Us: The State of Community Sport in Canada, 2014 examines how Canadians view community sport. The study found that people value community level sport and believe that it teaches youth positive values.

"We know that leading an active lifestyle has many health benefits for the entire family and encourage all British Columbians to explore how sport can help us lead healthier lives," said Health Minister Terry Lake.  "Healthy Families BC is proud to support the fifth annual RBC Sports Day in Canada."

However 60 per cent of people believe that poor parental behaviour is a threat to achieving this belief. The report indicates that 80 per cent believe sports provide opportunities to pursue excellence and 77 per cent think it strengthens communities by reducing crime.

"When community sport is based on the True Sport values of excellence, fairness, inclusion and fun, there are almost no limits to what sport can do," said Karri Dawson, Executive Director of the True Sport Foundation.  "It is every parent, coach, referee and athlete's responsibility to defend and celebrate a positive sporting experience for all, because good sport can make a great difference."

The study also found that a negative sport experience can turn kids away from physical activities. Critical threats identified include lack of access for some people and violence.
