2020-02-25 17:00:00 2020-02-25 19:00:00 America/Vancouver Alternator Salon This drop in salon series is ideal for artists who are interested in engaging discussions about art and are open to getting feedback from gallery staff and other artists. What is a salon? A salon is a gathering of people (under the roof of an inspiring host!) as a place for the exchange of ideas that often revolve around art and literature. Salons have a long history in art. This salon series is guided by a process of art criticism and provides a framework through which to articulate, judge and explore the meaning of works of art that we experience. Art criticism is the discussion or evaluation of visual art based on its aesthetics. It asks the viewer to consider the work that they are looking at critically, and question what the artist is trying to say, the art historical context in which the work exists and ultimately, how successful it is as a work of art. The process of art criticism is valuable not only in learning how to look at other’s work, but also provides an important lens through which to understand one’s own artistic practice. It is also the framework in which many galleries (including contemporary art galleries) will evaluate work. If you are interested in making your work available to a critique process we encourage you to contact the Alternator at info@alternatorcentre.com. Space is limited. At each event in this series, three artists will have the opportunity to display their work for critique. Spots are claimed by first come first serve request. This event is free and open to the public, for observation or participation. Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art #103 - 421 Cawston Ave events@kelownanow.com
