Considering our rapidly evolving technological industries and our ever-changing society, research is essential to our everyday world. In celebration of the importance of research and why it matters, UBCO will be hosting the 10th annual Celebrate Research week on March 2nd until the 6th, and they're inviting the community to join in on the fun.

Throughout Celebrate Research week, individuals will have the opportunity to discover what actually goes on inside a research lab, the current happenings of our community, and what makes UBC's researcher tick.

The week will kickoff with a keynote address form UBCO Professor Emeritus Patrick L. McGeer, and he'll be discussing his research into Alzheimer's disease and advances using aurin tricarboxylic acid.

The excitement surrounding Alzheimer's is mounting as McGeer has screened thousands of compounds to find aurin tricarboxylic acid, and if his predictions are correct that the acid works in a spectrum of human diseases, it may become the most widespread drug ever developed.

McGeer's presentation will take place at the Mary Irwin Theatre, Rotary Centre for the Arts on Monday, March 2nd at 7:00 p.m.

According to professor Gordon Binsted, McGeer's research is an example as to why UBCO celebrates scientific investigation and innovation.

“Our research has come a long way in 10 years,” said Binsted. “Advances in technology mean the research keeps advancing and our professors are finding new ideas and ways to investigate and solve challenges. Celebrate Research week gives our faculty members and students a chance to share what they’re working on and let the public know about some of the many great projects underway on this campus.”

Aside from attending McGeer's presentation, the public is encouraged to participate in a series of other campus presentations involving various science projects and thesis work.

In addition, there will also be an expert panel discussion on March 4th from 2:00 until 3:30 p.m. The panel will be discussing the challenges Okanagan municipalities face when dealing with sustainable development. Topics include social inequality, homelessness, historic preservation, sustainable urban planning, and affordable housing. The panel will be held in the Arts Building, room 376.

With so much going on over the week, there's surely something for everyone.
