A new food delivery service, Skip the Dishes, is coming to Kelowna.
Similar to Uber Eats, the app-based service allows you to scroll through menus from participating restaurants, pubs, diners, ice cream shops, smoothie bars - even candy shops- and order your choice item to be delivered.
The app allows you to select, order and pay (including tip), so all you have to do once the food arrives, is devour it.
Kim, a Skip The Dishes user in Calgary, said the service can be incredibly dangerous, as there are so many savoury items to choose from.
"It was a day or two after Valentine's Day and we were sitting at home when I saw I could order a box of candy - right to my doorstep - so I did," said Kim.
The cost of the delivery is either free or a few extra dollars, depending on the value of your order.
Currently, Skip The Dishes, is building up its list of participating restaurants for the Kelowna-based service.
No date has been announced, except that the service is coming soon.
While the customer process is said to be user-friendly, there have been issues on the restaurant's side regarding filling orders, according to a former server of an Italian restaurant in Calgary.
"Basically orders would go missing all the time, and when they did it would be unclear who to blame," said Megan, former server from Calgary.
"The delivery people were always different, because my understanding is that anyone can do it.
"It's like the Uber of food service, so they aren't employed by the restaurant and therefore it's hard to really organize them I think," she said.
At the time, the service was brand new, and she imagines most of the kinks have been ironed out by now.
According to Kim, a frequenter of the service, she's never had an issue.
"One time we put an order through and the restaurant was closed. So they called us right away, reimbursed us and gave us a discount on our next order," she said.
The app-based delivery may require a bit of a learning curve for Kelowna's participating restaurants at the start.
But it has the potential to help local businesses grow their clientele, regardless of seating options.
And of course, the user benefits are endless: dozens of dish-free dinner options for customers in the comfort of their own home.
