Gareth Tyrrell

What do you always find yourself saying?
Cheers mate.  I’m from the UK, so I find myself calling everyone mate.

David Suzuki.  I love his passionate views about Canada, the environment and our future.

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
An international design award for our concrete tiles or furniture.

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
Bob Marley, he is one of the most influential musicians of all time and inspires people from all over the world. The music he creates is more than just creating entertainment and a living, but about raising the social consciousness of unjust inequalities that exist in our world.

Who inspires you?
People who dare to live fully and aren’t scared of failure.

What are three things on your bucket list?
Machu Picchu, Venice and to revisit Thailand.

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
Beeracuda

If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
I like embracing the unknown, so I wouldn’t want to see my future.

What are you passionate about?
Concrete, art, travel, music and showing compassion towards others.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
Meeting my wife.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
When Mode Concrete was featured in the Globe and Mail earlier this year.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
Woodfire Bakery.  It is delicious comfort food in a down-to-earth environment.

What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?
Any outdoor activity in the Okanagan.  Whether I’m hiking with my dog or at the lake for the day, the beautiful scenery in and around Kelowna makes me feel incredibly fortunate to live here.

What is the name of your business/organization?
Mode Concrete

What does your business/organization do?

To be featured in Forbes Magazine.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
Us… of course

What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
Honesty, integrity, and always staying on time and budget with all of projects.

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
We wouldn’t have been able to reach this level of success without the help of the people who work with us and along side us.  We extend our warmest wishes of gratitude for all those that have helped us along the way.

How does your business/organization impact the community?
We source local talent, we support local entrepreneurs, we support local charities, we care about the environment and we offer non-toxic, dust free options whenever possible.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
Richard Branson.  He is a mega-entrepreneur and a brilliant financial investor.  Anything that comes out his mouth would be valuable.

If I could change one thing about Kelowna, it would be:
Our skys would never get gloomy and we’d have long sunny days in the winter and summer.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The people, the sense of community, the opportunities, the scenery and the beautiful weather.  Everyone that calls Kelowna home is fortunate!

My choice for the Kelowna In Focus spotlight is:
Sean MacMillan from Othroquest
