In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
Miranda Hart

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I have lived here for seven years.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My daughters because they are the only people I know who can rival my
thirst for silliness.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Beach, waves, wilderness.  So many places, so little time.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
I don’t shop. I mean other than food, I rarely go into stores.

What is your favourite activity?
Surfing. Make that: trying to surf.

If you had to choose: pizza, tacos, or burgers?
Kombucha

What is a hidden gem you enjoy in the Okanagan?
Every week I discover a new hike….there’s too many to name.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
It’s really hard to embarrass me.  Ask my 13-year-old.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I get inspired by people who are able to reinvent themselves. I love the idea of going sideways, no matter how old you are.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Playing with my sisters in the forest. Sasquatch was a prominent theme.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I pick up garbage everywhere I go. It infuriates me that people use this valley as a garbage dump.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Abolition of cars across the globe.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Lake swimming.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
A secret beach, hike in only.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
Cars rule this town and it makes for a really dangerous and ugly infrastructure. In my dreams, Highway 97 disappears, but in the meantime, we need more dedicated (i.e. real) bike lanes.

If you were granted one wish for work or in life, what would it be?
To be able to try all the things that interest me – there are so many different directions one can go, yet we are forced to commit to one, maybe two..

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I am an enthusiastic fermenter – of food, that is.

What is the name of your business/organization?
Soil Ecology Lab at UBC Okanagan

What does your business do?
Tries to understand how soil biodiversity can help agriculture and preserve wild spaces.

How to people connect with you through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest).
I’m a conscientious objector to most social media – so they’d have to go old school (email).

Where can people find your business online?
www.mirandahart.ca (it’s desperate for an update, though)

Why did you get into/start this business?
I fell in love with forests when I was a kid, and as a teenager thought, I should save old growth forests.

What is the goal of your business?
Make the public aware of how important soil biodiversity is – not just for farmers but for everyone. Without these creatures, our society doesn’t have much of a chance.

What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
Time, it goes by so quickly. I don’t have nearly enough to learn all that I want to.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I would have taken a gap year in my twenties to surf.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
It siphons the money from the one per cent and helps communities retain their culture. I hate how globalization has homogenized so much of the planet.

Give someone that you think deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Rebecca Tyson, for being a tireless voice for cyclists at UBCO and in Kelowna, and for making us a community of cyclists at UBCO.

My nomination for the In Focus spotlight is:
Peter Jaklic , owner of Temenos Crossfit.
