In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses, and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
Britt Vig.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I’m a born and raised Kelowna girl. My dad was born here and so was my husband. Our children are lucky enough to be the third generation born at KGH.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
I can’t just choose one. I love hanging out with my family, which includes my husband, Darrell and my children, Peyton and Hunter. They give me a lot of love and support. Without the support of my husband, I wouldn’t have the career that I have today.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Anywhere hot.  I’m not really a cold weather person. I’ve always blamed that on being born and raised in Kelowna. We are spoiled here compared to the rest of Canada, but this -20 weather is not for me!

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
There are a group of stores in South Pandosy, including Bella, Ginger Lily, Pretty Little Things and The Wardrobe Boutique, that I really like.

What is your favourite activity?
I love camping. I never camped when I was a kid, my mom wasn’t really the camping type. When I met my husband and his family, they introduced me to camping. Now I love it.  Camping allows me to really shut down from work and life for a couple of days and relax.

If you had to choose: pizza, tacos, or burgers?
Definitely tacos, fish tacos, chicken tacos…doesn’t matter. I love Mexican food, especially with Valentina Mexican hot sauce!

What is a hidden gem you enjoy in the Okanagan?
Mill Creek Regional Park. It’s a great park in the Ellison area. My family and I have enjoyed our time hiking and exploring the park.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I jumped off a swing while I was at the park with my son and husband in May and ended up breaking my foot. I’ve always been pretty clumsy.  You can always count on me to do something entertaining.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Having my children, Peyton and Hunter. They inspired me to live my life differently, less selfishly. Once you have a child, you have to think differently about your actions, your goals and how you treat others.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
My family and I drove from Kelowna to Disneyland when I was 11 years old.  The entire trip was about two weeks in total and included a lot of really good times. With any great family vacation, there were some arguments, but overall it was so memorable.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I sit on the Board of Directors of the Bridge Youth & Family Services Society. I’ve been the Treasurer for the last three years and I am currently the Vice President. I’m very proud to be a part of this organization. We have a great staff who are so committed to making the community a better and healthier place to live.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would love it if people could focus on the good things in the world, rather than the negative. If you give negative behaviour positive reactions, like media attention and social media attention, it will just promote the same type of behaviour.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
I love hiking around Kelowna, whether it be Knox Mountain or Mill Creek. There are so many great spots. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to do much hiking this year due to my broken foot and recovery, but I’m looking forward to getting back into it.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
Most of my favourite spots would actually be on the outskirts of Kelowna. We enjoy camping in a lot of different forestry sites. Since we have a fifth wheel trailer, we don’t need the luxuries of a provincial park. I would name a few, but I don’t want to give away my favourites!

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
I would love to see more of a focus on the link between mental illness and substance abuse. I would love to see more support for counselling and follow-up programs for these individuals. Everyone deserves to live a happy, healthy life and sometimes everyone needs help.

If you were granted one wish for work or in life, what would it be?
To always remember the important things in life. It’s easy to get caught up in the business that comes with a career and a family, but staying committed to those that are most important to you will make sure that you are successful in everything you do.

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I am a card and board game geek. I love strategy board games, anything from Catan to Puerto Rico to Dominion. I have a hard time sitting doing nothing, so card games and board games help me keep busy while relaxing.

What is the name of your business/organization?
I’m a Partner with BDO Canada LLP.

What does your business do?
We are a National accounting firm. We provide proactive accounting services to help people work on their business, not in their business.

How do people connect with you through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest).
Facebook

Why did you get into/start this business?
I love problem solving and I really enjoy working interactively with other people. My work allows me to do both on a regular basis.

What is the goal of your business?
My goal is to help people grow their businesses.

What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
Competition is always a big thing in a career. I had to learn that comparing myself to others isn’t always helpful.  You need to be aware of your own strengths and development opportunities in order to really become successful.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I would do the same things again. I’ve learnt a lot by making a few mistakes along the way, and listening to those who have been successful in the past. The reason people become successful is by learning from their mistakes.

Why do you think it is important to shop local?
Shopping local allows our community’s economy to keep growing as we support those that live and work here.

Give someone that you think deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Deanna Stone from Montgomery, Myles and Stone Law Firm.  She became a Partner back in September at the firm.

My nomination for the In Focus spotlight is:
Deanna Stone.
