In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses, and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
Steven Morrison.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I grew up between Kelowna and Vancouver. Moved away after my undergraduate degree at UBC-O and just moved back home to the beautiful Okanagan in August last year.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
Hanging out with my step-dad and watching sports because it’s the best, relaxing downtime with the hardest working man I know.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Portugal and Spain, these countries have beaches, wine, sunshine, hiking and outdoor adventures. Although, we also have all of that here in Kelowna!

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
I love to support the local stores here in town, however one of my favourite local brands is Okanagan Lifestyle, which is online and carried by a few of the local stores.

What is your favourite activity?
I am generally active and can be found at yoga, spin class, playing basketball and hockey or training for triathlons.

If you had to choose: pizza, tacos, or burgers?
First place is pizza, second is tacos and third is burgers.

What is a hidden gem you enjoy in the Okanagan?
November Project Kelowna. Free fitness class at 6:29am at the Sails every Wednesday morning! This is a class for everyone and is led by the always encouraging and amazing Roz Huber.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
The Quinn Keast Foundation, United Way, UBC-Okanagan and UBC-O Heat Athletics, the YMCA, as well as a few other organizations. I will be working closely with, and as part of, the society behind the new incoming Okanagan College basketball program. I am also always looking for more opportunities to give back and support the community.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Wow, tough to pick just one. Snowboarding and skiing in the winter. Golfing and any lake/boating activities in the summer. Also, I really like hiking and camping year-round.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
I have been thrilled about seeing the entrepreneurial spirit and support in Kelowna the past few years. I would love to continue to see young professionals and the larger Kelowna community support our local businesses and entrepreneurs, including in the growing tech and innovation industry.

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I played basketball for the UBCO Heat.

What is the name of your business/organization?
I am an associate lawyer with Farris, Vaughan, Wills, and Murphy LLP here in Kelowna.

What does your business do?
As a solicitor in Farris’ corporate and solicitor practice groups, I practice in the areas of corporate/business and commercial law, real estate, banking, financing, securities and wills and estates. Although Farris is a full service law firm with litigation lawyers practicing in other notable practice groups including employment, civil litigation, and family law.

Why do you think it is important to shop local?
Kelowna is driven by the local people whether they grew up here or moved here to make it their home. We cannot and do not depend solely on the tourism industry anymore. Our community depends on one another to continue to grow as well as to maintain what makes our city so special. Shopping local is just one of many ways to support each other both in a business aspect, and personally.

Give someone that you think deserves it a shout out and explain why!
I would like to give a shout out to Madison Kaneda and her initiative project 'You’ve Got the Love'! One $5 dollar button purchased for someone you love puts six meals on the table for those in need. Look out for what’s next from 'You’ve Got the Love'.

My nomination for the In Focus spotlight is:
Chelsea Wilson, a new litigation associate to our firm who has recently made Kelowna her home.

We encourage you to leave your comments and words of support below and submit your own nomination by clicking HERE. You are also welcome to submit a form of your own by clicking HERE. Thank you, Kelowna.
