Meet Sian! She's born and raised in the Okanagan; she has spent the majority of her life in the valley. Leaving home a couple of times over the years for education and athletic opportunities.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My two nieces, they make life sweet as pie. They teach me more than anyone in this world, in more ways than one. Their energy, presence, innocence, and curiosity makes me realize time and time again what truly matters most.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
Bia Bora because the people are always kind, positive and helpful.

Describe yourself in one word.

 Heart

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Japan. Why? I have never been there before, and it seems like a prominent place to explore breathtaking landscapes. I want to become well cultured in my lifetime, as I see the world as my playground and home. It would be the perfect adventure to take at the drop of a hat.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Trail Running/hiking, many trails bring me back to my childhood memories. Activities in nature capture my attention the most.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
This one time I was crossing a crosswalk and out of nowhere a bird pooped all over me, I swear it had held it in for about 8 hours because it was everywhere. I was completely covered. At that moment, I could not comprehend what was happening until I glanced at the gaping jaws dropping from heads behind the wheels. As I wiped my face, I scurried to my car where I got changed into my work clothes and had nothing but the nasty shirt I had on to wipe my face and hair to ‘clean’ myself up before heading to work in a hurry.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Recently within the last 3 years…going to the World Art Exhibition in the United Kingdom was truly inspiring. The way it happened, the opportunity and the lessons it taught me about life and people- was well- transformative in a
profound way.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Dirt Biking and horseback riding in East Kelowna with family and friends. Growing upon an acreage, I was fortunate enough to experience a lot of amazing things- nature, tree forts, and playing in the dirt are still the most beautiful memories I cherish.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I give back in different ways; unanimously, attending local charity events, and speaking to youth groups to help them navigate the world and discover more of themselves.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
The Education System

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
East Kelowna or Bear Creek, I usually pack a lunch and hang out by the water|listening to music/podcast or find myself dabbling in a good book.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?

Having a greater sense of community connection by creating more opportunities for people to gather, and come together in a meaningful way would be wonderful to see. Growing up here, I remember people were much more connected on a ‘human’ level. I believe creating an opportunity for more downtown markets to take place would not only support local businesses but also create a deeper sense of connection in the heart of Kelowna.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
It has the perfect mix of seasons, and there are brilliant people in this city that I  love.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1) Swim with a Blue Whale
2) Skydive (how is this still pending!)
3) Live on a sailboat for 3 months

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I am a poetic, philosophical introverted-extrovert that loves to engage in meaningful conversations, and who is always up to play a polo match.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn are the most common.

Instagram
LinkedIn
Facebook

What is the name of your Business/Organization?
The Business of You

Why did you get into/start this business?
I am passionate about supporting people in achieving their innate human potential. Educating and supporting people is often compartmentalized versus seeing a ‘human-being’ as a human being. The Business of You was birthed to take an all-encompassing approach to human development and performance.

What is the goal of your business?
Empower people to become the best version of themselves by supporting and developing their lifestyle/health goals so they can build a deeper level of fulfillment. Elevate the state of consciousness and mindfulness in individuals and collective groups long term.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
As a curious person, that finds a lot of fields interesting and exciting, I have faced the challenge of choosing ‘one path.’ Recently, I was listening to Marie Forleo’s podcast and she spoke about her personal struggle with the same conundrum. This totally resonated with me because I am curious about many different aspects of this world. Breaking things down and finding ways to incorporate all aspects of the things I love has been my biggest challenge.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things are different?
I think we all wonder ‘what if’ sometimes in our lives, but I have learned to jump off that ship as fast as possible. My personal and professional life have unfolded by discovering my gifts, strengths, and weaknesses through the failures and successes I’ve experienced over time. For every negative moment, I have had one hundred great ones, and this perspective has made this ride worthwhile with no regrets.

What do you always find yourself saying?
‘Let go’— these two words help me continue moving forward through uncharted terrains.

Tell us your best piece of life advice?

Own who you are with conviction, no exceptions, period.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?

Ellen Degeneres

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Shopping locally breeds connection. Having people see the value that comes from supporting passionate people trying to make a difference is what builds a positive culture in the community we call ‘home.’

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Creating a level of fulfillment that is unshakable. My father always told me to ‘enjoy the ride’ and I can proudly say I absolutely do through thick and thin.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Aman Dosanj- this woman is an unstoppable force in this community. I had the recent privilege of attending her event- International Woman’s Day Dinner and the experience was phenomenal. The more I speak with Aman, the more I understand her mission and passion around food and bringing people together. She has the heart of a lion and is incredibly creative and talented. I feel that she is a real community leader in the culinary field, and as a female entrepreneur in Kelowna. The Paisley Notebook and Pop Up Dinners exude her creativity, vision, and love for bringing people together. She is a true beauty in this community that many including myself salute with grace.

My choice for the Kelowna Now In Focus spotlight is:
Mitch Howanyk is a talented musician who has created a new band called IMPAVID. The band IMPAVID is a multi-instrumental duo bringing a new sound to folk/ Indie/soul. Their style is unique, fresh and bold; they deserve an opportunity have others learn more about their project and mission.
