Meet Sky. Sky is Okanagan born and raised! She is originally from Penticton and has been living here in Kelowna for seven years now. She is very passionate about health & total wellbeing and strives to empower and inspire others to fully accept and love themselves as they truly are.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
Born and raised in Penticton. I have been in living in West Kelowna for almost 7 years.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My husband. We always challenge and support each other and can talk about anything and everything. He’s just as silly as I am and it’s never boring.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
Blonde. I don’t do a ton of shopping but when I do I always go there. I love how cute it is and the owner is just so passionate and warm.

Describe yourself in one word.
Passionate.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Probably somewhere in Italy. It’s so beautiful and I love wine, pizza and pasta.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Walking. I love long walks and it’s so beautiful here.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
At my daughters Christmas concert a little boy wasn’t paying attention and goofing off and fell off the side of the small stage. I held my laugh in but the biggest snort came out and instantly all eyes were on me. I was so uncomfortable.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I had a stillbirth at 21 weeks with my daughter almost 2 years ago. It was devastating and hard to navigate. The community poured their love into me and helped me and my family. I’ve never felt so much love and it’s been so amazing knowing we live in a community that’s so willing to help those who really need it.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
We would pull the mattress into the living room with all the curtains closed and enjoy junk food, movies and video game battles all weekend as a family. It was so simple but the absolute best.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I volunteer at mamas for mamas. They have helped my family through so much and continue to and it's nice being able to help others and connect with so many incredible people in the community.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?

So many things. How we talk about health and body image. How we talk about loss and grief. Basically, I want more compassion and empathy in the world.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
The Nut Farm. It’s stunning there and feels like I’m somewhere magical.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
More support for women and families struggling with pregnancy loss. It feels like a taboo subject even though so many have experienced it and a lot of the health care system is lacking in how to care for these women. The stories are devastating. There wasn’t much support when I was going through it and I’ve been passionate about changing that ever since.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The people. There are some incredible people here creating amazing change and support systems. They are so willing to change the status quo and it’s a powerful thing.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
Offer self-love retreats and workshops for girls and women.
Travel with my family and experience the world with them.
I’d love to write a book one day.

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
This is a hard one because I’m an open book and share pretty much everything. I used to have an obsession with cows and a whole collection of all things cow related.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
Instagram @capricious_fitness

What is the name of your business/organization?
Capricious Fitness

Why did you get into/start this business?
I wanted to change how we view fitness. Less appearance based and more mental, emotional and physical health. Empowering women.

What is the goal of your business?
To empower women and teach them to love themselves at every stage in life. The focus is always on weight and appearance and that isn’t healthy. I’ve been too thin and too heavy and learning to love myself is where I found true health and happiness.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Navigating life without my daughter. Losing her has taught me so much about myself and empathy but it’s hard navigating the world without her.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I wouldn’t change my life it’s been a rollercoaster but I love who I am and my family and what I’m doing. I wish I could have been this empowered at a younger age but hope to teach that to my kids.

What do you always find yourself saying?
“We need to change that!”

Tell us your best piece of life advice.

"Be authentic and tell your story. You never know who you will empower and connect with and life is so amazing when people can love you for you."

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Ellen. Her honesty, love and humour are amazing and I think a conversation with her would be amazing.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Because we have some amazing people doing amazing things and we want to support them and their families so they can continue.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Starting a pregnancy loss support group and finding ways to offer more for women in our community. Just the connection is amazing and so needed.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
My husband. He supports everything I do even when it sounds crazy. He doesn’t always understand it but he sees my passion and he pushes me to go for it.
