Now that the labour dispute has ended, the B.C. government is busy organizing the payment of the promised $40/day.
The government's Temporary Education Support Payment will be paying $40/day for each eligible student 12 years and under. The amount will be paid for September 2 to September 18, the day that the teachers ratified the new agreement. This is 13 days in total, meaning that the government is paying $520 to parents for each eligible child.
The government expects to send out most payments by the end of October. However, they warn that they could need additional time to confirm with school districts about students who entered kindergarten and those who are new to B.C. schools.
On other school issues, the provincial exams that are scheduled for November will apparently not be moved. Additionally, students who were unable to write elements of June's English 10 and Social Studies 11 exams will have the opportunity to write those elements in November. For those on semester schedules, the Ministry of Education is scheduling more exam dates for the first week of February so that students can write exams with equal number of instructional days.
There are no plans so far to extend the normal school day or add instruction days to make up for the lost time.
