Vancouver Ranked 4th Greenest City in the World

The annual Global Green Economy Index (GGEI) has been released and for the first time Vancouver has been recognized as one of the greenest cities in the world.

The GGEI took an in depth look at 60 countries and how they perform in the global green economy. First published in 2010 the GGEI focuses on environmental performance and enhanced data collection and processing methods. This year the winners were Germany and Sweden who continued to show leadership for green strategies.

For the first time Costa Rica performed well in the rankings as it landed third on the list. For perceptions of the world’s greenest cities Copenhagen came in first, followed by Amsterdam, Stockholm and Vancouver. Canada ranked 12th on the list for Country perception as the GGEI looked at Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa.

A total of 70 cities worldwide were included in this year’s index and the worst countries for green initiative perception were Uruguay, Panama and Senegal.

For actual performance Sweden, Norway and Costa Rica took top spot. Canada came in 29th place, just behind the United States and Rwanda. To see the full index listing download the report here
