A group of parents in Vancouver have filed a lawsuit against the Vancouver School Board (VSB) over transgender equality.

In June of this year the VSB passed a controversial gender policy which supports students that are LGBTQ+ and now that support is being challenged. A press release issued by the British Columbia Parents and Teachers for Life says the lawsuit is supported by over 175 parents.

“While the policy purports to provide better protection for “trans” students, it is being challenged on the grounds that it violates the city’s building code and other students’ constitutional right to privacy,” reads the statement.
The organization says that while the policy allows trans students to have access to washrooms and change rooms that corresponds to their gender identity, it grants a choice for use for those who are not considered transgender or transsexual.

“The policy is being challenged also with respect to its position on whether parents are entitled notice of a child’s gender-related behaviour in school,” the statement goes on to say.

The policy is being challenged in BC Supreme Court and is being viewed as a violation of parental rights and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
