Vancouver has moved up as one of the best cities for university students in the world, but still fails to land in the top 10.

According to TopUniversities.com the best place in the world for a student to study is in Paris, followed by Melbourne and London, England. Two Canadian cities did land in the top ten, Montreal and Toronto in eighth and ninth position. Vancouver landed 12th on the list, and is the only other Canadian city to make an appearance.

When it comes to desirability Toronto is in the top spot, followed by Sydney, Australia and Tokyo. Mexico City and Taipei tie for first place for affordability, while Vancouver drops to 25th place. The index was conducted by QS Best Student Cities and in since 2012 Vancouver has gained 12 places in the rankings.

“Whether you’re based in the city center or not, Vancouver has much to offer,” reads the description. “Vancouver’s Grouse, Seymour and Cypress mountains provide more than just a beautiful backdrop to the city – they’re also an incredibly popular destination for snow sports, offering some of the world’s best ski resorts. Even in the center of Vancouver the great outdoors is never far away – beaches, forest and stunning mountains are all within easy reach. For those who enjoy cultural pursuits over sports, however, Vancouver also offers an array of brilliant nightlife, theatres and music – everything you’d expect from one of Canada’s most loved cities.”

The University of British Columbia ranked 34rd in the world, which is six places higher than last year. For the full list of top university rankings click here.
