Sales numbers in the music industry are not looking very good in 2014 and illegal downloading may be to blame.

For the first time since 1976 not a single artist’s album has gone platinum, and crossed that million sales mark. According to Billboard there have been 60 digital songs to cross the million unit mark, compared to 83 last year and the soundtrack for Frozen has sold 3.12 million. But a single artist has yet to accomplish the feat and with only one more quarter left in the year things are not looking good.

So far this year Beyonce’s self-titled album has 776,000 units sold followed by Lorde’s Pure Heroine at 754,000. The singles to break one million in 2014 includes Pharrell Wiliams’ Happy, with 6.2 million; John Legend’s All of Me with 4.4 million and Katy Perry’s Dark Horse at 4.3 million.

In the fourth quarter the music industry does tend to see a spike in sales but experts don’t believe an album will cross the platinum mark in time. As no heavy hitters such as Rihanna, Adele, or Bruno Mars have plans to release anything this year.
