A Calgary hunter is dead after he accidently got between a grizzly bear and her cub in Kananaskis, Alberta.

On Saturday RCMP say they found a missing hunter, believed to be 54 year old Rick Cross. Police say he died from severe trauma from a bear attack and it looks as though he wandered into an area where the mother and cub were feeding on a deer. The hunter was overdue and expected back on September 6th after a day of hunting.

A Kananaskis RCMP media release states that the female grizzly and her cub were spotted in the immediate area and early evidence indicated the hunter had been injured in the area. Cross was alone at the time of the incident and police believe the bears were acting in self-defence as they left after the attack.

A bear closure has been issued for all areas south of the Mist Ridge trail, the area where the bear has been spotted and the attack occured.
