It was 17 years ago when a ship en route from Rotterdam, Netherlands to New York City hit a giant wave and knocked 62 containers off the ship.

Those containers were filled with Lego pieces, 4,756,940 pieces to be exact, and they are still washing ashore today. According to the ship’s manifest the toy kits were nautical theme and included bits such as scuba divers, pirates and sea creatures. Since the 1997 spill thousands of pieces have washed up on the shores of Devon, Cornwall and Wales, according to a local beach cleaning group.

The Lego Lost at Sea Facebook page details many of the finds over the years. Many of the pieces are in pristine shape. With nearly five million pieces lost during the cargo spill it’s a constant reminder of how much impact something like this can have on the environment.
