Canadian musician, Bif Naked, has pledged her support for the fight against poverty in B.C. by taking the Welfare Food Challenge. The Food Challenge was engineered by Raise the Rates, a coalition of community groups and organizations concerned with the level of poverty and homelessness in the province of B.C.
The group focuses on those individuals and families living on welfare. Raise the Rates is challenging B.C. residents to live on the amount of funds delegated to those on welfare for a weekly basis and document their journey and struggles along the way.
In the 2011 study, Cost of Eating in British Columbia, it states that the average monthly cost of groceries for one man between the ages of 19-30 to be $268.55 or $67.13 a week. Whereas, according to Raise the Rates, the same individual on welfare receives only $26 a week for food.
Naked has decided to take the challenge and his blogging about her journey via her Facebook page and Twitter.
“As we acknowledge our abundant blessings today, on World Food Day, I am starting my Raise the Rates B.C. Welfare Food Challenge, where I will eat from what I can buy myself with $21 for the whole week,” said Naked.
The singer-song writer posted two comparative photos, one displaying a plentiful assortment of organics fruits and veggies, ringing in at $45; the second photo displaying what she will eat for one week during the Food Challenge. With only $21, Naked purchased brown rice, two cans of chickpeas, two heads of iceberg lettuce, a pint of cherry tomatoes, six zucchinis, six bananas, and a bag of spinach.
