As the temperatures are drastically getting warmer, people are starting to head into the outdoors for all sorts of activities. If you've never tried fishing and you're thinking about grabbing a pole and trying your hand at it, we've got seven different locations that are easy to find and fun to fish.
Just remember to abide by the BC fishing regulations, as well as local governments' warnings and directions regarding the current flood conditions.
Boating on Okanagan Lake or other lakes mentioned should be avoided until flood levels decrease. Casting from shore is an option as well as as using non-motorized boats.
Here are seven fishing locations in the Okanagan Valley.
Oyama Lake
It's a bit of a long, bumpy drive up to Oyama Lake, but you won't be sorry you made the trip.
The pristine waters and quiet atmosphere is what makes this place so great.
Add catching a fish to that and well, that's a great day.
Expect to catch rainbow trout and the fishing is decent year-round because of the high elevation.
Jackpine Lake
Here's one from Trout Water Fly & Tackle:
This is a great family fishing spot with rainbow trout up to three pounds.
No motor boats are allowed.
Fly fishing is best here, near lily pads.
You'll have better luck during spring and fall.
Okanagan Lake
Okanagan Lake is often too busy to fish in the middle of summer, and too hot.
Still, there are spots that work and fish to catch.
Start early in the morning and head to the mouth of some of the rivers (i.e. Mill Creek and Mission Creek).
Sticking close to shore and either casting or trolling is your best bet for Okanagan Lake.
There's a variety of rainbow trout, whitefish and kokanee in Okanagan Lake.
Shannon Lake gets stocked by the Province each year.
Located in a neighbourhood of West Kelowna, it's easy to access.
It's stocked mostly with rainbow trout, large mouth bass and some perch.
It's a great place to fish as a family.
Rose Valley Reservoir Lake
Here's another one from Trout Water Fly & Tackle:
The Rose Valley Reservoir is a small, mountain lake northwest of Rose Valley properties in West Kelowna. This is a hike-in lake with three access points.
The lake is stocked with rainbow trout up to 16 inches and there's plenty of great hiking trails surrounding the lake.
For the best fishing conditions, head there during spring and fall.
Vaseux Lake
Vaseux Lake is also a provincial park, so be sure to check with the fishing regulations online.
No motor boats are allowed on the lake.
The water has a variety of trout, perch, kokanne, whitefish and bass, to name a few.
Watch and listen for rattlesnakes in the heat of summer.
Skaha Lake
Skaha Lake can provide some great fishing opportunities.
It has a variety of rainbow trout and a few kokanee, but the population has greatly depleted.
But has a good amount of small mouth bass to keep you busy.
So there's a few more spots to try out this spring and summer.
