Whether you're heading inland towards the Rockies or to the West Coast, the city of Merritt sits in the middle of the drive but is most likely not on your radar as it’s usually considered a pass-through town. Most stop in at the gas station or at one of the fast food chains, but believe it or not, there’s more to do in this valley than get gas!

Next time you're passing by, instead of just popping off the highway and grabbing the usual McDonalds or Tim’s, head into town and feast at one of the local cafes, have a picnic at the lake or visit the Walk of Stars.

Start your visit off at the Kekuli Cafe where you can get a warm cup of joe, tacos and bannock! Find yourself with a little bit of a sweet tooth after a meal? Head on over to Brambles Bakery and Cafe and taste some of their exquisite treats like cookies, croissants or cream puffs.

Did you know that Merritt is the "Country Music Capital of Canada"? We did! And we recommend checking out the Walk of Stars and the Country Legends Murals in the downtown area. More than 100 bronzed stars and dozens of large murals are displayed of Canadian and international country music artists.

Have a need for speed? Dependant on the season, when you stop by the heart of the valley, head to Merritt Speedway where you can watch stock car races.

Loud noises and motor oil not your thing? Merritt is surrounded by a number of lakes great for fly-fishing and hiking. Whether you're passing by in the summer or winter months, Chicken Ranch Lake, Shea Lake and Marquart Lake are all good for fishing throughout the seasons.

Want to stretch your legs? The Godey Creek Trails and Kentucky Alleyne Provincial Park are full of trails and beautiful scenery. Make sure to bring your camera!

Next time you’re travelling along highway 5, give this small town some love by stopping in for more than a bathroom break!
