Who says you can’t help support art education and have an amazing time doing it? Not the Kelowna Art Gallery. They are inviting locals and visitors alike to channel their inner sailor and break out their finest navy blues and whites for an upcoming fundraising event titled The Party Aquatic, to be held on Friday, July 5, 2013, from 7 to 10 pm.

The Party Aquatic is the 7th in the Kelowna Art Gallery’s GO Party! series, which pairs a Gallery Opening with live entertainment, refreshments, performances, art activities, and socializing. The evening will feature three bars; an aquatic-themed buffet; door prizes and a silent auction; a hands-on art activity; plus musical entertainment by DJ Q, who will spin vintage surf, reggae, and calypso music.

Proceeds from this fundraising event will benefit the Gallery’s educational programming, including their school tours program, Family Sundays, and Art Adventures art camps.

“Art Adventures,” said the Gallery’s events coordinator, Josh Desnoyers, “pairs children with 3rd and 4th years [in University art programs] as well as veterans of the art scene in Kelowna, so the kids get some really great, one-on-one, quality instruction.

“With this event, you can come and have an amazing time and feel good that the money you’re spending on drinks or, for example, on a ticket for the Orchard Park gift certificate door prize you end up taking home, will benefit the gallery’s educational programming.”

This fundraising event coincides with the opening of the exhibition, Douglas Walker: Other Worlds, on view at the Kelowna Art Gallery from July 6 to September 29, 2013. The exhibition features a massive seventy-seven-foot-long work on paper of an enormous whale, flanked by a mask made for a human face, and a full moon. This work will occupy the entire long wall of KAG’s large gallery space. Douglas Walker: Other Worlds is organized by the Dalhousie Art Gallery in partnership with the Robert McLaughlin Gallery and the Kelowna Art Gallery, with support from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Tickets for GO Party! 7: The Party Aquatic are $20 for KAG members, and $30 for non-members. They include two beverages, an aquatic snack buffet, and a ticket for the door-prize draw. Tickets are available for purchase at the Gallery, by calling 250-762-2226, or online (http://thepartyaquatic.eventbrite.ca/). They will not be available at the door, and can only be used by guests aged 19 or over.

Said Josh about online ticket purchases, “I will try to keep them open as close to 7 PM as possible; that said, we’ve had a significant rush in the last little bit so I would really encourage people to buy their tickets now. I would say with the buzz around this event that it is going to sell out.”

GO Party! 7: The Party Aquatic is generously sponsored by Meiklejohn Architects, Mission Hill Family Estate, Tree Brewing Co., Urban Distilleries, and Okanagan Spirits. Calona Costume has also recently come on board to supply dress-up outfits for photos at the event, as well as a ‘Live Mermaid’ who will be around to pose for photographs and help guests with any questions they may have.
