Three Dead in Highway 97 Accident

UPDATE: Highway 97 has had one lane re-opened heading northbound. Both southbound lanes remain closed from the Kelowna Airport to Beaver Road. RCMP have confirmed that three people have died as a result and other injuries were sustained. Three vehicles were involved in the crash confirms RCMP Cst Kris Clark. No other information about the head on collision has been released. RCMP are expected to release more details Wednesday morning.

A major crash has been reported on Highway 97 near Duck Lake past the Kelowna International Airport.

According to DriveBC the highway has been closed in both directions and traffic is being turned around. A witness on the scene tells KelownaNow that at least five ambulances have passed by his vehicle and numerous RCMP vehicles are coming and going from the scene. He says traffic is a mess in the area and he has been stopped on the highway for at least 30 minutes.

According to Kelowna RCMP the accident has involved several vehicles and traffic is being diverted at Airport Road and Beaver Lake Road. Police say the highway will be closed for several hours as they investigate the crash. Various reports have indicated that there may have been a fatality in the crash but police have not yet confirmed that, but are calling the injuries "serious."
