UPDATE:

Several people have been taken to hospital following a head on collision on Highway 97 and Westridge Road Thursday morning between Vernon and Kelowna.

According to RCMP the two vehicle crash happened around 6:15 a.m. when a northbound SUV jumped the median and crashed head on into a truck that was towing a trailer.

The impact of the collision sent the trailer into the nearby ditch and completely destroyed the SUV.

Three people in the truck, including a husband, wife and teenage child suffered injuries. According to RCMP Spokesperson Gord Molendyk the driver of the truck sustained serious injuries and the other two have minor injuries.

The driver of the SUV also sustained serious injuries to their legs and abdomen. Traffic was reduced to single lanes with a northbound lane being used as a southbound lane so traffic could continue along the highway.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation and police hope to have the highway fully reopened this (Thursday) morning.
