A 19 year old Kelowna man is facing potential drunk driving charges after he and a passenger were sent to hospital with serious injuries Wednesday night.

According to Kelowna RCMP a single vehicle crash occurred on Springfield Road at Hollywood Road South at around 11:53 p.m. on August 20th. A black Chevy Blazer sheared off a street lamp, flipped and caught on fire.

Luckily emergency crews were able to extinguish the flames before they engulfed the vehicle. Officers on the scene suspected the driver of impairment after noticing a strong odour of liquor.

The driver blew a ‘fail’ during the roadside test but since he required medical attention because of the crash he was taken to hospital for treatment. The passenger suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and another person in the vehicle was not injured.

The driver faces charges of Impaired Driving Causing Bodily Harm and Driving While Over .08, pending the results of a blood sample taken. The 19 year old has also been issued a 24 hour driving prohibition.
