The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) has released information that shows how much more a union worker in Kelowna can make compared to non-union workers.
Researchers at the CLC have found that workers in Kelowna earn $4.74 an hour more than their non-union counterparts. The CLC surveyed wages in 76 Canadian metropolitan and other census areas. They discovered that in BC unionized workers earn an average of $5.60 an hour more than non-union workers, which adds up to an extra $605.74 million a week in the provincial economy.

Researchers also found that centres with more union members support a richer mix of businesses and services. The CLC adds that being in a union is especially important for women and younger workers. In BC women who belong to a union earn an average of $6.49 an hour more than non-unionized female workers. Young workers aged 15 to 29 also earn an additional $4.35 an hour if they belong to a union.
In Canada there are currently 3.3 million unionized workers.
