A new health website has been launched that allows Canadians to look up their local hospital and compare it to others nearby.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information recently launched the site after compiling concerns of Canadians. It identified five themes including access to services, quality of care, spending, health promotion and disease prevention and health outcomes. Anyone can go onto the website and find out information about their local hospital.

According the site 85.9 per cent of people in Kelowna report having a regular medical doctor. The information also indicated that Kelowna General Hospital has a higher cost per patient stay in acute care than the country with an average cost of $5,772 per person. An in depth look at Kelowna for medical care shows that there are 131 doctors in our region for every 100,000 residents.

Our region is also above average for breastfeeding initiatives, avoidable deaths from treatable causes and hospitalized heart attacks. Kelowna and Interior Health falls below average compared to the rest of the country when it comes to repeat hospital stays for mental illness, low risk caesarean sections, avoidable deaths, self-injury hospitalizations and avoidable deaths from preventable causes.
