The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) says Kelowna is a great place to consider if you are thinking about launching a small business.

The CFIB released its top places to start and grow businesses in 2014 and Kelowna has landed in the top five spot, an increase from last year. CFIB looked at cities with populations of roughly 150,000 or higher and scored each place on a variety of indicators. The top cities to make the list with similar populations were as follows:

Among mid-sized urban areas, with fewer than 150,000 people, Lloydminster topped the list, followed by Fort McMurray and Camrose, Alberta.  Kelowna again landed on the list for major cities with an entrepreneurial presence, just behind the City of Montreal and Montreal periphery.

The CFIB looked at 14 indicators, grouped into three main categories; presence, perspective and policy. The combined communities of Airdrie, Rocky View, Cochrane and Chestermere that ring around Calgary’s periphery takes the top score of 70.8 out of a possible 100. This area also received the top score in 2012 and 2013.

Overall Kelowna ranks 15th in the country when combining all three groups, presence, perspective and policy, with a possible score of 61.2 out of 100.
