The Criminal Justice Branch and the Ministry of Justice says no charges will be laid against two Princeton RCMP officers in relation to an excessive force allegation.

The complaint involving the two officers took place on March 22nd, 2014 and spurred an investigation by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO). RCMP officers were investigating a pickup truck that was idling in a school parking lot at around 3:00 a.m. in Princeton. The first officer on scene initiated an impaired driving investigation and called for back-up. During the investigation an altercation took place between the driver and police and the driver was arrested.

According to the report from the Ministry of Justice the driver passed out in the back seat of the police cruiser and was taken to hospital for medical care. The driver was released from hospital later that afternoon and because the suspect was taken to hospital the IIO was called to investigate.

“The officers involved in the incident provided an explanation for the force used which Crown counsel has concluded is reasonably capable of belief in all of the circumstances,” reads the statement. “In addition, Crown counsel has concluded based on the available evidence, that there are concerns with respect to the weight that can reasonably be given to the statements of the driver and the passenger in the vehicle.”

The driver had a charge of assaulting a police officer approved against them as a result of the altercation. The case has now been closed.
