Several horses seized in a warrant on Thursday had body conditions so poor that they didn't even hit the scale used in measuring.

According to Kathy Woodward, BC SPCA senior animal protector officer, the SPCA executed a warrant on Thursday at a property in Armstrong, seizing 16 horses. “Members of the public had called in to our call centre, advising us of concerns they had for the horses there,” said Woodward.

The horses that the SPCA took into custody were emaciated, or abnormally thin or weak. Woodward says that on a scale from out of 9, the horses they took into custody had body condition scores ranging from 0.5 to 1.5. “A 1.5 is considered emaciated,” said Woodward. “A 0.5 doesn't even hit the scale.”

There were about 117 horses on the property in total, says Woodward. Though the others were in better condition, Woodward said that the SPCA still has concerns about some of those still on the farm. “We will be following up and re-attending the property,” she said.

The SPCA will also be forwarding charges regarding this file to Crown Counsel.
