Delving into the world of local arts and culture, the Kelowna Art Gallery is gearing up for an exhibition featuring two prominent Canadian artists. A Terrible Beauty: Edward Burtynsky in Dialouge with Emily Carr will run from January 11th to March 9th, 2015.

Eighteen works by national acclaimed Canadian photographer, Edward Burtynsky are paired with nine paintings by Emily Carr. Both of these artists have explored the connection they have felt with the natural world and conveyed in their respective works.

Beginning with Burtynsky's earlier work, the Kelowna art gallery will feature a selection of his very first professional prints. These prints were shot in the early 1980s in British Columbia. The next prints for showing will be his marble quarry images from the 1990s, followed by the super-famous, bright red nickel mine tailings shot near Sudbury, Ontario in the mid 1990s.

The exhibition will incorporate some of his work from China and will end with a recent photograph of an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as an erosion control scene in Iceland. Burtynsky's work explores the human imprint on the planet.

Canadian cultural hero, Emily Carr has led a difficult and challenging life, fighting against the repression of her own culture. The selection of works for this show will centre around her depictions of logging and gravel quarrying, both human incursions into the pristine rainforest environment that Carr adored.

Three of the paintings by Carr have been borrowed from the collection of the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

An opening reception to celebrate this exhibition will be held on Friday, January 16th from 7 p.m. to 9p.m. at the Kelowna Art Gallery. This event will be free and open to Gallery members and guests by invitation.

A Terrible Beauty: Edward Burtynsky in Dialogue with Emily Carr is organized and circulated by the Vancouver Art Gallery with support from the Killy Foundation.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in downtown Kelowna. For more information about current exhibitions, public programming or special events, visit their website.
