Transportation BC has shared a neat video of a cougar casually hanging out in the middle of the highway near Elko.

Along Highway 3, the province recently installed new wildlife detection systems and they have captured some very interesting things. The thermal cameras are set up in wildlife detection corridors and work in conjunction with radar sensors to help detect wildlife and alert drivers of their presence with flashing roadside signs. The two detection systems cover about nine kilometres of Highway 3 where large populations of animals tend to roam.

One of the cameras recently captured a cougar crossing the highway, taking a three minute stop in the middle of the road, and then moseying on its way. Before the animal takes off, a large truck comes speeding down the highway but slows before reaching the creature as the signs around the bend were flashing to warn the driver.

In another video shared by TranBC, the footage shows a herd of elk safely crossing the highway as trucks slowly make their way down the stretch of road. In this video, the drivers must slowly pass by the animals as they dart from one side of the road to the other.

It’s an interesting perspective of the wildlife that calls this area home.
