Storm watchers and surfers are having a great time in Tofino.

An extreme wave hazard advisory was issued for the area earlier in the week and on Thursday the storm started to batter the region’s beaches.

“Large ocean swells reaching up to nine metres are predicted during the two day period. High tides of up to 3.6 m occurring mid-day are predicted to compound the wave hazard,” read the alert from Parks Canada.

“These conditions could result in flooded beaches, floating logs, large waves breaking high up on shore and extremely hazardous surf conditions.”

It didn’t take long for the waves to reach that height as they were reported to reach 9.5 m on Thursday, the first day of a three day storm.

According to CTV News, these waves are the largest to hit the area decade and many locals are even saying they’re the largest waves they’ve ever seen.

With so many people admiring the power of mother nature on Thursday, plenty of photos and videos of the incredible waves have been posted to social media.
