Good news for Canadians who are frustrated that they miss out on all the new and exciting Super Bowl advertisements that air in the United States only.
On Thursday in Ottawa, CRTC Chairman Jean-Pierre Blais announced that Canadians have time and time again complained about missing out on these ads as well as parts of the game. Blais said that given the fact the Super Bowl is a unique event that is heavily promoted by advertising, which has become part of the spectacle; the CRTC has decided to prohibit simultaneous substitutions during the game. But viewers will have to wait until the Super Bowl in 2017 for this to occur.
It will be up to Bell Media, the current rights holder, to enforce this new rule for the 2016 game next year.
“In addition, the CRTC will not tolerate avoidable errors related to simultaneous substitution. It is putting in place regulatory measures to ensure that Canadians don’t miss important parts of the programming they enjoy and pay to watch,” said Blais.
The CRTC hopes that Canadians will report any errors of complaints of non-compliance once this takes effect. Cable and satellite companies that make errors may have to rebate their subscribers, while local television stations that make errors may lose the privilege to request simultaneous substitution for a period of time or for specific types of programming.
