The Tuxedo Party of Canada has put forth its candidate for the October 19th election, a cat named Earl Grey. The party leader is asking Canadians the question, “Who stands on guard for me?” The party platform looks to protect animals from cruelty, abuse, and neglect.

“Animals in Canada are currently not afforded adequate protection under the law. Due to loopholes, outdated wording, and inadequate law, convictions of animal cruelty are unlikely,” reads the party’s platform. “Action is needed to change the laws and protect animals; without adequate legal protection they are defenceless against mistreatment.”

The Tuxedo party was formed in 2012 by a group of friends who wanted to speak for those who were unable to speak for themselves. The party has run two ‘political’ campaigns, including Stan for Mayor of Halifax, and Earl Grey for Premier of Nova Scotia to raise awareness of the overpopulation of homeless cats.

The Halifax campaign saw success as a municipal grant was given to support an affordable spay/neuter clinic. All funds raised by the Tuxedo Party support the spaying and neutering of cats in need.
