In a recent study done by the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) it studied the rate of mortality and hospitalization in Canadian nursing homes.
The study looked at 640 publicly funded nursing homes in Ontario, where after a year of being admitted 11.7 per cent of the residents had died, while 25.7 per cent had at least one hospital visit before discharge.
384 of those nursing homes were for-profit and 256 were not-for-profit.
After one year residents in for-profit facilities had a hospitalization rate of 462 per 1000 person-years, while not-for-profit had 358.
The researches obtained all incident admissions to the nursing homes between January 1, 2010 and March 31, 2012. Researchers explained in the study that they didn’t take into consideration previous quality of care, staffing levels, whether the facility was part of a corporate chain, and how closely associated the home was with specialized medical services.
