RCMP have confirmed that four people are dead following the school shooting in Saskatchewan, not five people, which was previously thought.

A complaint came into La Loche RCMP around 1:00 p.m., Friday afternoon about an active shooter in the northern community.

Following the complaint RCMP members went to the La Loche Community School at the Dene High School building and began to search for the shooter.

At 1:47 p.m., RCMP members took one male into custody outside of the school and a firearm was seized from him.

RCMP confirmed that there is a second location that they are investigating which is a residential building on Dene Crescent. Police are asking the public to not attend the school or the residential building.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said earlier on Friday afternoon that RCMP had told him five people were dead, but during the most recent press conference RCMP confirmed that the number was in fact four. A number of people have been injured during the attack but RCMP are not saying whether all deaths and injuries happened at the school.

They would also not say if the deaths were students, teachers, or community members.

Chief Supt. Maureen Levy said there are specialists on site as well as additional personnel but she said during the press conference that she could not answer many questions because she didn’t want to ruin the integrity of the investigation.
