Extreme winter weather is going to be hit the east coast of Canada, with temperatures dipping well below freezing.

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for regions stretching from south east Manitoba to Eastern Newfoundland.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to heath, such as frost bite and hypothermia.

The warning states that cold wind chills between minus 30 and minus 40 are expected to settle in the region Saturday evening, lasting into Sunday morning.

The cold weather is being caused by cold artic area being carried in by north and northwest winds.

Environment Canada is reminding Canadians effected to wear appropriate clothing for the weather, dress in layers, and change out of wet clothing as quickly as possible.

They are also advising those living in affected regions to avoid alcohol, as consuming alcohol before going out into the cold can increase the risk of hypothermia, because it increases blood flow to the extremities of the body.
