Medically assisted dying is now legal in Canada.
On Friday, Bill C-14, criminal legislation on medical assistance in dying, passed in Parliament.
In a statement released by Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Dr. Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, announced the Bill.
“The Government recognizes the extraordinary efforts that were made in the House of Commons and in the Senate to ensure passage of this Bill, efforts that will now ensure safe and consistent access to medical assistance in dying across Canada.”
The legislation gives patients who are suffering and are on the path towards death, the choice of medically assisted death.
Those health-care practitioners who provide medical assistance in dying will not be charged with a criminal offence.
Health Canada will continue to work with each province and territory as different provisions of the legislation come into force.
A study will also be conducted with respect to mature minors, who are suffering from mental illness.
