Two people have been charged in relation to a horrific incident of animal abuse at the Craven Country Jamboree in Saskatchewan over the weekend.
According to Saskatchewan RCMP, an investigation into the incident that occurred at a campsite at the music festival began on July 16 after witnesses saw at least two men abusing a kitten. The kitten, now named Jamboree, was taken by RCMP to a local veterinary clinic in Lumsden, Sask. for treatment. An adult male was investigated under the criminal code and animal protection act.
As a result of the investigation by police, an adult man and a male youth have both been charged with causing distress to an animal. Both appeared in court in Regina on Sept. 19 and RCMP has not released their names.
“The members involved in this incident were very diligent in their investigation, and we were pleased to be able to bring charges before the court. The welfare of the kitten and the advancement of the investigation is due in large part to members of the public coming forward to assist the RCMP,” said police in a statement.
RCMP go on to say that while they recognize that the incident was an emotional one, they must be mindful that the accused are given the same consideration for a fair court process.
“We recognize this incident was an emotional one for many people; including the police officers involved,” continued the statement. “As such we will continue to apply our decision not to release the names of the accused.”
As for Jamboree, the kitten is said to be doing well and on the road to recovery. She is not currently available for adoption and remains in the care of veterinary staff.
