Thousands of bikes distributed out of Vancouver have been recalled due to serious safety concerns.

Models of Mikado, Oryx, Miele and Rocky Mountain bicycles with front disc brakes and a quick release lever on the front wheel hub, made between 2002 and 2016, have been included.

Bicycles are included in this recall if the clearance between the quick release lever when open and the front disc brake rotor is less than 6 millimetres, or about the width of a #2 pencil.

A quick release lever on the bicycle’s front wheel hub, when improperly adjusted or left open, can come into contact with the front disc brake assembly and cause the front wheel to come to a sudden stop or separate from the bicycle.

Health Canada and Procycle, who issued the recall together, both say they have never received any reports injuries related to the bikes in Canada although about 63,195 units were sold across the country between May 2002 and December 2015.

One of the main distributors, Rocky Mountain Bicycles, is located in North Vancouver.

If you own one of the recalled bikes, you should stop using it and contact an authorized dealer for a free installation of a new quick release lever on the front wheel.

You can also contact Procycle at 1-800-663-2512.
