Canadian women take rugby bronze in sport’s Olympic debut

It was a day of firsts for the Canadian women’s rugby team who fought for a medal on Monday in Rio.

Putting in a powerful first half helped the team take bronze against Great Britain in a match that ended 33-10.

Australia and New Zealand topped the podium in the first the rugby sevens tournament ever held at the Summer Olympics.

At the half, Canada led with a strong 26-5, a shock to the British side that had beaten the Canadians 22-0 on Sunday in group play.

For the tournament, Toronto-native Ghislaine Landry led the Canadian team in scoring with 41 points on five tries. Bianca Farella, of Montreal, had 30 points from six tries.

Kayla Moleschi, 25, of Williams Lake, B.C. played back in the starting lineup on Monday.
