Have you been stressed about buying the perfect Valentine’s present for your special someone? Will you be sleeping on the couch if you forget to buy them something?

It seems like no matter what time of year it is, there are always gifts to buy.

While some people boycott the largely commercialized sentiment, nearly 70% of Canadian men and women say that Valentine's Day is more than just a "silly holiday".

In fact, Valentine's Day gifts tend to cost between $5 and $200, according to a recent poll by Ebates.ca.

When asked what they'd most like to receive for the occasion, lots of Canadians want to dine out, and others are hoping to receive flowers.

The poll looked at Canadians' gift giving habits for other occasions too, including birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, weddings, housewarmings, Mother's Day and Father's Day.

In total, 84% of Canadians purchase at least one gift in a typical month, up slightly from last year.

But how much are we spending per gift, on average? The three most expensive gifting occasions are weddings, at an average cost of $120, followed by birthdays and anniversaries, both at around $90.

Canadians shell out similar amounts for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day.

When it comes to gift giving overall, Canadians generally like doing it – less than a quarter said they do it just because they’re expected to.

Do you think gifts are necessary for each holiday? Are they something you budget for? Let us know in the comments below.
