The Government of Canada announced on Friday that it will provide almost $120 million in humanitarian funding to respond to what’s been called the largest humanitarian crisis since the end of the Second World War.
Earlier this month, The United Nations appealed for urgent humanitarian aid, proclaiming that the conflicts in northeastern Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen, as well as a devastating drought affecting Somalia, have resulted in over 20 million people facing extreme food insecurity.
In response, Ahmed D. Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced on Friday that Canada will provide $119.25 million in humanitarian funding to respond to needs of crisis-affected people in Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen.
“Canada is continuing its humanitarian tradition by stepping up to bring much-needed humanitarian assistance to communities in need,” said Hussen. “We work with trusted humanitarian partners that will make sure that the aid gets there quickly and goes to support the most vulnerable people.”
The funding will help provide life-saving assistance to crisis-affected people in these countries and will consider the specific needs of women and children.
Among other things, the funding will go towards the provision of food and nutrition, healthcare services, clean water and sanitation facilities.
This new funding comes after Canada provided over $100 million in life-saving humanitarian assistance to crisis-affected people in 2016.
