The Women’s March is set to take place again today in cities across Canada, as well as around the world.
2017’s march was revolutionary, as it brought six million people together across the globe in support of women’s rights and freedoms. The year is the third anniversary, with the theme of ending violence against women.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 1 in 3 women worldwide has experienced either physical or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.
“We are here to give voice to women to stand up and speak out about things that are important to them.” said Women’s March Canada Executive Director Sara Bingham. “The first Women’s March, a national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, the #MeToo movement, unfounded sexual assault cases across the country, are not individual movements. It’s time to gather together and end violence against women in Canada. It’s time to take action.”
Events across the country will feature music, art, community booths, and speakers on principles such as ending violence, protection of reproductive rights, LGBTQIA rights, workers’ rights, civil rights, disability rights, immigrant rights, Indigenous people’s rights and environmental justice.
In Canada, marches are set to take place in cities like Calgary, Edmonton, Chilliwack, Vancouver, Victoria, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, and more. For more information, click here.
